Customers can invite family or friends to build a cart together.
Set up a family cart
Before you start shopping, create a family account.
If you're new to Instacart, you can create a family account during signup. Enter your friend or family member’s contact information on the Invite the family along screen and select Invite.
If you already have an Instacart account, follow the steps below.
In-app—
- Log in to your Instacart account.
- Tap the Account icon.
- Go to Manage Family Account under Shop Preferences.
- Enter the additional member’s contact information and tap Send invite.
On the website—
- Click the 3 horizontal lines in the upper left corner.
- Click Start a family account.
- Enter the additional member’s contact information and click Send invite.
Join a family cart
Got an email or text invite to join a family cart? Select Accept invite, log in to your Instacart account or create an account, and start shopping the family cart.
Switch between a family cart and personal cart
- Select the View cart icon in the bottom middle of the screen.
- Select the 3 dots in the top right corner of the cart screen.
- Choose Switch to a family cart or Switch to a personal cart.
Make sure you’re in a family cart to view the items a family member added. You can’t view each other's items from a personal cart.
You can each shop individually if you prefer. Items in a personal cart don’t add to a family cart.
Check out with a family cart
Anyone with access to the family cart can check out and place the order using their account payment method. However, cart members can't split payment.
Everyone in the family cart gets a notification when someone checks out the order. Everyone gets order updates, but only the person who checked out the order can select replacements, edit the existing order, and chat with the shopper.
NOTE: If you deactivate your family account before completing a family cart order or switching to a personal cart, you lose all of the items in your family cart.
